Beginner Tips
Spoiler-free new-player tips to start strong.
Path of Exile 2 is deep and doesn't hold your hand, so a handful of habits make a huge difference in your first run. These spoiler-free tips cover the systems new players most often get wrong — no story details, just smoother play.
Your weapon (or gem level) is your damage
The most common beginner mistake is letting your weapon fall behind. For attack builds your weapon's base damage is the single biggest source of your DPS, so replace it the moment you find something better — a low-damage weapon makes everything feel like a slog.
For spell builds the equivalent is your skill gem level: spells get their base damage from the gem, so prioritize leveling and equipping higher-level Uncut Skill Gems.
Cap your resistances
Elemental resistances (Fire, Cold, Lightning) cap at 75% and reduce damage before anything else — at 50% instead of 75% you take double the damage from that element. Leaving resistances uncapped is the fastest way to get one-shot.
Because the game applies a stacking resistance penalty as you progress, capping isn't a one-time task. Whenever a fight suddenly feels lethal, check your resistances before blaming the build.
Learn the dodge roll's limits
Dodge roll is your main defensive tool, but it does not make you invincible for the whole animation — only a brief early window avoids Strikes and Projectiles. Damage over time, ground effects, and many area hits aren't avoided by rolling at all.
Because the i-frame window is short, a mistimed roll can be worse than just walking out of the way. Roll to reposition out of telegraphed attacks rather than rolling 'into' damage and expecting to be safe.
- Only the early part of the roll avoids hits — it's not full invincibility.
- DoT and ground effects can't be dodge-rolled by default.
- Use rolls to reposition, not as a panic 'ignore damage' button.
Set up a loot filter early
PoE2 floods you with drops, and without a filter you'll waste time on junk. Grab a community loot filter (FilterBlade is the standard) and run a softer/semi-strict version during the campaign so you still see leveling gear.
Once you reach the endgame, switch to a stricter filter so only worthwhile items show. A good filter is one of the biggest quality-of-life upgrades a new player can make.
Concentrate your support gems
Support gems are unique per character — you can't socket the same support into two different skills. Beginners often spread their best supports thin across every skill they own, which weakens their main attack.
Instead, pick your primary damage skill and stack your four or five best supports on it. Off-skills (utility, movement, a backup) can get by with weaker supports or none at all.
Do the side quests with buff rewards
Scattered through the campaign are quests that grant permanent rewards — skill points, life, spirit, and resistances. Skipping them leaves free power on the table that you can never get back later.
Watch your map overlay for quest markers (icons that indicate a reward-granting objective). A few minutes of detours adds up to a meaningfully stronger character by the time you reach maps.
Read your skills and items
PoE2's depth lives in the tooltips. Hover over your gems, supports, and passives and actually read what they do — many 'why isn't this working' problems come from not noticing a condition like 'on hit' or 'from Hits' in the wording.
Take your time. The game can be paused-friendly in solo play, and a few seconds reading a description saves a lot of confusion (and deaths) later.
FAQ
What are the biggest beginner mistakes in Path of Exile 2?
The big ones: letting your weapon or skill-gem level fall behind, leaving resistances uncapped, spreading your best support gems across too many skills, skipping permanent-buff side quests, and wasting high-value orbs on temporary campaign gear.
Does the dodge roll give invincibility in PoE2?
No — only a short early window of the roll avoids Strikes and Projectiles. Damage over time, ground effects, and many area hits can't be dodge-rolled by default, so use the roll to reposition out of telegraphed attacks rather than to ignore damage.
Should I use a loot filter in Path of Exile 2?
Yes. The game drops a huge volume of items, so a community filter (FilterBlade is the standard) saves a lot of time. Run a softer version during the campaign so you still see upgrades, then switch to a stricter one in the endgame.
Why is my damage so low in PoE2?
Usually an outdated weapon (for attack builds) or low skill-gem level (for spell builds), plus support gems spread thin across multiple skills. Update your weapon/gem constantly and stack your best four or five supports on your main damage skill.
Can I respec or change my build in Path of Exile 2?
You can refund passive points (typically by spending currency/gold), so a campaign character isn't locked in forever — but it's still smart to follow a build guide your first time so you don't have to undo large mistakes. Confirm current respec costs in-game, as they can change between patches.
